The spadix has a faecal odour and a temp much warmer than the surroundings so atracts insects which then fall into the body of the plant.

The innside: the spidery bit at the top are sterile flowers, perhaps keeping the larger flies out. The small bulbous bit in the middle are male flowers, and the lower bit are female.
